Buying a Ticket at the Station

This morning I wanted to visit my friend, but his home is a bit far from where I live, so I decided to take a train. After leaving home, I took the subway to the train station first. When I arrived, I saw there were many people, and I worried I wouldn’t be able to buy a ticket.

I lined up at the ticket counter first. When it was my turn, I said to the staff, “Hello, I’d like to buy one ticket to Nanjing.” The staff asked, “What time do you want? Today or tomorrow?” I said, “Today at 2 p.m. Do you still have tickets?”

The staff checked the computer and said, “There are still tickets for 2 p.m., but only a few left. Do you want a hard seat or second class?” I thought for a moment and said, “Second class, please. How much is it?” He said, “180 yuan in total.”

I paid and got the ticket, then asked, “Which platform do I board at?” The staff said, “Platform 3. After you go in, walk to the right.” I thanked him and felt reassured. I thought: if I come again next time, I’ll buy the ticket in advance.

Cultural Insights

Tickets and queues

At busy train stations, lining up at the ticket counter is common, especially if you need help choosing a seat type or time. Staff often ask “今天还是明天”“几点的”“要什么座位”.

Asking “在哪个站台上车?” is practical and polite. Travelers often plan ahead because popular times can sell out, so “提前买票” is a useful habit.
