Reading Speed in Our Story-Based Curriculum

Reading Chinese through stories is different from studying vocabulary lists. Here, the goal is following meaning and enjoying the story, not translating every character. As you progress from HSK 1 to HSK 3, your reading speed and comprehension improve naturally.

  • Recognize characters and basic words in context
  • Typical speed: 30–60 characters/min
  • Time for 100 characters: 2–3 minutes

HSK 2: Reading in Chunks

  • Recognize whole words and simple sentence patterns
  • Typical speed: 80–120 characters/min
  • Time for 100 characters: 45–75 seconds

HSK 3: Following Ideas and Emotions

  • Recognize multi-character words automatically
  • Understand grammar without stopping
  • Infer meaning from context
  • Comfortable story reading: 150–220 characters/min
  • Time for 100 characters: 25–50 seconds
