WEEK 7 — DAY 6
同一场活动,两种心情:喜欢的人和不喜欢的人
Summary (EN): Two short viewpoints describe the same event: a community outdoor music show. One person loves it; the other doesn’t enjoy it. The texts contrast 喜欢/不喜欢 and use simple comparisons like 更喜欢/比较喜欢 plus polite disagreement with 但是/不过.
LEVEL/WORDCOUNT: HSK2 / ~500 words

Same Event, Two Feelings: Someone Who Likes It and Someone Who Doesn’t

Viewpoint 1 (I really liked it): Last weekend, the community center held a small concert in the park. I often listen to songs, so when I heard the news, I was very happy.

That evening the weather was great and the park looked beautiful. I went with a friend, walked around first, and then found a good place to sit. I relatively like light music, and I like live music even more. Because people sang and played instruments, it felt very “real.”

I also met new friends. Everyone took photos and laughed together. I think this kind of activity is interesting, and I hope there will be more in the future.

Viewpoint 2 (I didn’t really like it): I know many people like music, but I relatively like quiet. That evening there were many people in the park, and it was a bit noisy. At first I wanted to listen, but later I felt too tired.

I don’t really like standing all the time, and I also don’t really like seeing too many people. However, I think this activity is good because it lets everyone come out to meet and also meet new friends. So I hope next time there will be quieter music, or fewer people.

How to Use the Audio

The audio is designed to help you improve your Chinese listening skills and pronunciation. You can use it in two ways:

  • Before reading the text: Listen first to practice understanding spoken Chinese. This helps you focus on pronunciation, rhythm, and listening comprehension without relying on written characters.
  • After reading the text: Listen again to compare your own pronunciation with the native speaker. This helps you improve speaking skills, pronunciation, and fluency.

Listening regularly with and without the text will strengthen both your comprehension and speaking abilities in Chinese.

Grammar

1) Simple comparison with 更: 更 is placed before an adjective/verb to mean “even more.” Example: “我更喜欢听现场的音乐。”
[1] 2) Softer comparison with 比较: “我比较喜欢轻音/安静。” This is a gentle way to say “I rather like…” (not extreme).
3) Polite disagreement / contrast: 但是、可是、不过 introduce a different opinion; 不过 often sounds softer. Examples: “但是我比较喜欢安静。” “不过,我觉得这个活动很好…”[2]

Cultural Insights

  • In casual Mandarin, people often soften disagreement with contrast words like 可是/不过 and then give a reason, instead of saying a strong “no.”
  • [2]
  • Outdoor community events in parks are common “low-cost social” activities, and people may react differently depending on whether they prefer 热闹 (lively) or 安静 (quiet).
  • Saying “我比较喜欢…” or “我更喜欢…” is a friendly way to express preference without criticizing others.

Retell the Story

用你自己的话写这个故事。

中文建议:写两段“观点一/观点二”。每段用:我喜欢/我不太喜欢 + 因为…所以…。再用一次比较:我比较喜欢… / 我更喜欢…。最后用“不过…”说一句礼貌的不同意见。

[1][2] English tips: Write two short viewpoints. In each: like/dislike + because/so. Add one comparison (relatively like / like even more). End with a polite contrast using “however”.[1][2]

document.querySelectorAll(‘.tab-group’).forEach(group => { const buttons = group.querySelectorAll(‘.tab-btn’); const contents = group.querySelectorAll(‘.tab-content’); buttons.forEach(button => { button.addEventListener(‘click’, () => { buttons.forEach(btn => btn.classList.remove(‘active’)); contents.forEach(content => content.classList.remove(‘active’)); button.classList.add(‘active’); document.getElementById(button.dataset.tab).classList.add(‘active’); }); }); });
